Matthew Coglianese practices in the areas of litigation and environmental law, emphasizing CERCLA, RCRA, mold and indoor air quality issues, brownfields redevelopment, and state and local environmental matters. Mr. Coglianese has substantial experience in construction and environmental permitting, counseling and litigation at the federal, state and local levels His practice also includes toxic torts as well as corporate due diligence.
Mr. Coglianese served as Assistant Regional Counsel with the United States Environmental Protection Agency in Atlanta, Georgia, where he handled enforcement of federal water and air pollution laws. As senior attorney with a major Los Angeles-based petroleum company, he was responsible for managing numerous Superfund and state hazardous waste sites throughout the country. He also was in charge of client counseling regarding legal responsibilities and remedy selection, as well as overseeing litigation and outside counsel.
Mr. Coglianese is the author and co-author of numerous articles on environmental law including: The Toxic Mold Threat to Commercial Property, The Real Estate Finance Journal, Spring 2003; Easing the Red Tape on Cleanups, Area Development Online, December 2004; Mold Mania, Builder Magazine, Summer 2003; Brownfields Come of Age in South Florida, Florida Environments, 1996 and The Self-Critical Analysis Privilege, The Florida Bar Environmental and Land Use Law Section Bulletin, 1995. He also lectures frequently on environmental topics. Mr. Coglianese’s accomplishments have been recognized by Chambers USA (2003-present), Best Lawyers in America (2005-present) and the South Florida Legal Guide Top Lawyers 2006. He is the recipient of The Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit (2005) and the John Edward Smith Child Advocacy Award (2005). Mr Coglianese is AV Peer Review Rated and is a member of the American Bar Association, Dade County Bar Association (Chair, Environmental Law Committee, Dade County Bar, 1995-1996) and Florida Bar (Member, Section on Environmental Law), the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
Mr. Coglianese received his B.A., cum laude, from the University of Rhode Island in 1976, his Ph.D. in Biology in 1981 from Texas A&M University and his J.D. in 1984 from the University of Miami School of Law. He is admitted to practice law in Florida and California.
